Lawless twins sign with Spoon River

Amy and Megan Lawless are taking their game to the next level.

The Lawless twins, recent graduates of Routt Catholic High School, signed letters of intent to attend and play softball at Spoon River College on full scholarships Thursday night at Routt.

“It is a good feeling to know that I’m going to get to do two things that I love, working in agriculture and playing softball with my sister,” said Amy, who will be majoring in agriculture.

The Lawless sisters have plenty of experience playing softball together. Megan is a pitcher, while Amy is a catcher.

Both girls had opportunities to play volleyball, but chose softball instead.

“Ever since I was little I liked softball more,” Megan said. “I always dreamed of getting a scholarship, so once I heard I was offered a scholarship, I was like, ‘I’m going to do it.’”

Said Amy, “Volleyball wasn’t as much of a passion as softball was for me.”

The twins struggled through a rough season at Routt, in which the Lady Rockets won only four games. The difficult season did little to dampen the girls’ drive to play softball, however.

“Actually, I think it ignited the idea of playing in the future,” Megan said. “I’ve been through a rough year this year, and I’ve actually grown in my pitching, so I was hoping that maybe that would start something new.”

Spoon River is a Division II junior college that plays both fall and spring seasons. Former Triopia-Meredosia softball players Erica Schnitker and Ashley Sanders currently play for the Mudcats. Both Schnitker and Sanders have played summer ball with the Lawlesses.

“I was ecstatic when I heard they were on the team with us,” Amy said.

Spoon River coach Larry Warden, who was on hand for the signing, said he was pleased to have the twins on his team.

“I can’t wait until the fall season starts,” Warden said. “I can’t wait to see the team that we put out there, and to add these two to it, I can’t wait to play some games.”
