Co-ed dodgeball league starts June 11 — Sherwood Eddy Memorial YMCA adult co-ed dodgeball league will begin June 11. Matches will be played at the Y Wednesday nights. Each team will have six players on the floor and at least one of those players must be female. Those signing up for the league must at least be in high school. The league will be officiated, and all participants will be expected to display the best of sportsmanship considering the competitiveness of this sport. Rosters are due May 30. Virginia’s Bergerud earns honor — Megan Bergerud, a sophomore at Virginia High School, was recently named to the Premier Basketball 2008 Girls’ All-Showcase Team. The event was held April 20 at Millikin University in Decatur. Sponsored by The Gym of Springfield, the basketball showcase is an NCAA certified college basketball exposure camp. The showcase is for high school, post grad and junior college basketball players who would like to improve their recruiting interest at the collegiate level.
JHS grad Scott wins Colorado Marathon — Brian Scott, a 1996 graduate of Jacksonville High School, won the Colorado Marathon in Fort Collins on Sunday. The victory was Scott’s second in row at the Colorado Marathon. Scott ran the 26.2-mile race in 2:31:33, more than five minutes faster than he did a year ago. Scott, who currently lives in Naperville, claimed the lead early in the race to take a wire-to-wire win. He won by just under three minutes.
Charity softball tournament June 14 — A softball tournament will be held for Dalton Harding, an 11-year-old boy with Anaplastic Lymphoma Stage 4, in Beardstown on June 14. He is the son of Nola (Aires) Harding, formerly of Jacksonville, and grandson of Rhett and Paula Lipcaman of Jacksonville. Sign up by June 13 by calling Tabatha at (217) 323-1120 or Beth at (217) 371-0298. The cost is $10 per person or $100 per team. There will be raffles, food and a 50/50 drawing.
Pembrook, Reese earn varsity letters — Millikin University junior Kayla Pembrook’s play in the 2007-08 season earned her a second varsity girls’ basketball letter. She was also named her team’s Defensive Player of the Year, as well as being named a co-captain for next season’s varsity squad. Pembrook is a graduate of Greenfield High School. Millikin University freshman and Jacksonville High School graduate Erica Reese earned her first varsity swimming letter for the 2007-08 season. Reese was also honored as an Outstanding First-Year Swimmer.
J’ette Dance Camp July 7-9 — The Jacksonville J’ettes are holding their annual J’ette Dance Camp from 8 a.m. to noon July 7-9 at Turner Junior High School. The cost is $40 per camper and includes a T-shirt, two routines, drills, technique sessions and a snack daily. The camp is open to students in grades K-12 (grade in the fall). Four Lady Blues make All-MWC team — Four Illinois College softball players who had a big impact on the diamond for the Lady Blues this spring have been named to the 2008 All-Midwest Conference team. Seniors Keena Canevit of Canton and Sarah Holloway of New Berlin were joined on the All-South Divison first-team by sophomore Kacey Morrison of Peotone while senior Kristen Schmalz of Troy was named to the All-South second team. Canevit, a four-time all-league honoree at third base, hit a team-high .440 with 37 hits, 14 doubles and 19 runs batted in. Holloway was 8-4 on the mound for the Lady Blues with a 3.42 earned run average and 85 strikeouts in 73.2 innings of work. She also hit .308. Morrison clubbed a school-record 10 home runs and paced her team with 31 runs batted in en route to an impressive .881 slugging percentage. The second-year shortstop batted .429. Schmalz, one of IC’s leading pitchers over the past four seasons, finished 6-7 with a 5.01 ERA and 55 strikeouts. At the plate, the Triad High School graduate hit .300. Canevit led the Midwest Conference in doubles with 14 while Morrison was second in home runs, third in total bases (73) and fourth in RBIs. Holloway was second among league pitchers in strikeouts.
Bumgarner earns letter at Millikin — Millikin University senior Cliff Bumgarner earned his first letter as a member of the 2007-08 men’s golf team. Bumgarner, from Concord, graduated from Triopia High School.
Hawk Pride Football meeting tonight — The Carrollton Hawk Pride Football Booster Club will have their May meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 7 at Goetten’s Oasis in Carrollton. The main topic of discussion will be the June 14 Hawk Pride Golf Tournament. For more information, call club secretary Eric W. Weber at (217) 248-0014.
Brian Luber Jamboree schedule set — Schedules for the Jacksonville Soccer Association’s Brian Luber Jamboree are set and can be picked up in the concession stand on Saturday. They are also posted online at www.playjsa.org.
JHS soccer team car wash May 10 — The Jacksonville girls’ soccer team will have a car wash from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 10 at the Quick Lane Car Wash on South Main. Price is $5 for a wash and dry. The team will also be selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts for $6 a dozen. Lunch items cooked by Steve Matthews, including Jones pork chop sandwiches, Crimson burgers and hot dogs, will also be available.
IC makes Div. III Golf Championships — Illinois College is among the 20 teams announced as participants in the NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championships May 13-16 at the Centennial Oaks Golf Club in Waverly, Iowa. The championship will consist of both team and individual competition conducted concurrently. The tournament consists of 72 holes of play over four days of competition. In the team competition, the low four scores from each team for each day will count in the team’s total score. Ducks Unlimited Summer Shoot set — The Jacksonville Ducks Unlimited Chapter will hold its 3rd Annual “Summer Shoot” at the Jacksonville Sportsman’s Club near Lake Jacksonville May 18. The event, which features a sporting clays shoot, runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., is open to all levels and ages of shooters. For a donation of $50, each shooter will walk through the Sportsman’s Club grounds taking their best shots at 100 birds. A raffle ticket for a chance to to win DU merchandise will be given for each bird broken. Other activities include an impossible target station and raffles for decoys and guns. Crimson Football Pride meeting May 7 — The monthly meeting for Crimson Football Pride is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 7 in the Jacksonville High School media center. All football parents and any interested persons are encouraged to attend.
