Sports Briefs: May 11-17

Local sports briefs published in the Journal-Courier from May 11-17.

 

Buchanan aces Hole 9 at Northridge — Don Buchanan aced the 155-yard ninth hole at Northridge Hills Saturday. Buchanan used a 7-iron. The shot was witnessed by Rodney Simmons, Matt Dennison and Nick Tapscott.

 

Bradley hits ace at Jax Country Club — Jeff Bradley, of Jacksonville, hit a hole-in-one on the eighth hole at Jacksonville Country Club. Bradley aced the 177-yard hole using a 5-iron. Witnesses were Frank Long, Dr. Bob Bradley, Dr. Jim Green and Dr. Don Hawrysz.

 

MacMurray softball wins SLIAC award — The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has selected the MacMurray College women’s softball team for the SLIAC All-Conference Sportsmanship Award. Highlander members include: Patty Bruns (freshman, Triopia); Gina Campbell (junior, Teutopolis); Jessica Deardorff (freshman, Mundelein); Sarah Deardorff (freshman, Mundelein); Danielle Edenburn (freshman, Loda); Kristin Flahive (sophomore, Mendota); Betsy Heise (junior, Jacksonville); Stephanie Hill (sophomore, Hoffman Estates); Rikki Jenkins (freshman, Virginia); Lee Miller (sophomore, Eureka); Lyndsey Minton (sophomore, Hesperia); Emily Moffitt (senior, Thorntown, Ind.); Lindsay Molnar (senior, Divernon); Lauren O’Brien (junior, North Riverside); Julie Reeves (freshman, Normal); and head coach Shelley Whitaker.

 

Lady Rockets basketball camp set — The Routt Catholic High School Lady Rockets basketball team will host a four-day instructional basketball camp June 2-5 at the Routt Dome. Basketball fundamentals will be stressed during this camp. The camp is open to all girls entering grades 5-8 this fall. Cost for attending the camp is $40, and all campers will receive a complimentary T-shirt. For questions or more information, call Joe Eilering at 371-9144. Lenz Field baseball 7-8 league open — Lenz Field LLC will be offering a baseball league for boys ages 7 and 8. All players that were 7 or 8 on April 30, 2008 are eligible to play. Any boy younger than 7 on April 30, 2008 must be approved by Tom Lenz before playing in this league. This league will run from mid-July to late August and will be machine pitch. All games will be played on the artificial grass turf field in Jacksonville. Each team will play approximately 10-12 games. Many games will be played later in the evenings to avoid potential problems with summer heat. Athletes may register as individuals or as an entire team. Cost is $50 per player, and the deadline for registration is July 1. This league is designed for the serious youth player who wants to enhance his skills by playing more games. This league is expected to draw several teams from Jacksonville and the surrounding areas. Registration forms are available at www.lenzfield.com. JHS grad Bunner earns All-District — Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville shortstop Cory Bunner (Jacksonville) has been named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District V baseball team. Bunner, a senior shortstop, was named to the first team in the College Division. His name will be added to the list of nominees to become an Academic All-American. One of the top infielders in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, Bunner holds a .351 batting average with a team-leading 12 stolen bases. His team finished the regular season with a 24-24 record and a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament as the No. 2 seed in the West Division.

 

Northridge Hills to host Jr. Scramble — On June 5, Northridge Hills will host its annual Junior Scramble. This is a two-person event. Tee times begin at 10 a.m. There are two divisions: nine holes and 18 holes. The cost is $10 per person for nine holes and $15 for 18 holes. On July 10-11, the Junior Coca-Cola Classic will be held. Night Golf Scramble spots available — The Central Prairie American Red Cross still has spots available for its Night Golf Scramble at The Links in Jacksonville tonight. Registration begins at 8 p.m., with a shotgun start at dusk approximately at 8:45 p.m. Prizes and 50/50 to follow. There is a $10,000 Hole-in-One prize donated by Jess Spradlin Home Sales. The $45 registration fee includes nine holes, cart and cash prizes. All proceeds stay locally, benefiting American Red Cross services in Morgan, Cass, Scott and Greene counties. Irish Junior Football meeting tonight — The Irish Junior Football team will have a parent informational meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Jacksonville. Parents of boys entering grades 5-8 this fall are encouraged to attend. Schedules, fees and fundraising efforts will be discussed during the meeting. Parents who are interested but unable to attend can call 491-2703 for more information.

 

JHS Athletic Booster Club meeting set — The May meeting of the JHS Athletic Booster Club will be held May 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. The Athletic Booster Club supports all sports teams at the high school, including cheerleading and poms. All coaches, liaisons and those interested in JHS athletics are encouraged to attend. JHS grad Valentine named co-MVP — Western Illinois University’s Samantha Valentine, a Jacksonville High School graduate, was named a first team all-conference selection for a second year in a row. She was also a first team all-tournament selection and was named tournament co-MVP after going 9-for-13 with 4 RBIs this past weekend in Utah.

 

JHS girls’ soccer Alumni Game June 1 — The Jacksonville High School girls’ soccer program will have its annual Alumni Game Sunday, June 1 beginning at 6 p.m. at Alumni Field. Alumni, please wear a red T-shirt. For more information, call John Mansholt at 243-7838.

 

IC players finish among stat leaders — Several Illinois College baseball players finished among the Midwest Conference statistical leaders this spring. Jared Thoele, a junior from Springfield (Sacred Heart-Griffin), led the league in on-base percentage (.522), ranked second in batting (.423) and was fifth in hits (47). Junior Clint Wherley of Beardstown set the league pace in doubles with 18 and was third in batting (.415), third in hits (49) and fifth in total bases (76). Adam Baran, a sophomore from Bartlett, finished second overall in hits with 50, and B.J. Luxmore, a sophomore from New Windsor (Sherrard), led the league in sacrifice bunts with nine. Among the league pitching leaders, Illinois College’s Brad Collignon, a senior from Collinsville, led the conference in innings pitched (62.0) and batters struck out looking (17). He also tied for league honors in games started (nine) and was fourth in strikeouts with 35. The Blueboys’ David Cripe, a sophomore from Downs (Tri Valley), ranked third in batters struck out looking (15) and was fifth overall in strikeouts with 34. After finishing in a four-way tie for the top spot in the Midwest Conference’s South Division, the 18-13-1 Blueboys lost to Knox in a playoff game and came up short in their bid for a return trip to the league’s championship tournament. Head coach Jay Eckhouse’s squad hit .312 overall to rank third among the league’s nine teams, and the Blueboys’ 5.87 earned run average placed them sixth.

 

Calhoun High Golf Scramble May 18 — Golfers and sponsors are invited to take part in the Calhoun High School Gym Renovation Golf Scramble May 18 at Wolves Crossing Golf Course in Jerseyville. All proceeds are for the Calhoun High School gym renovation project. Entry and sponsor forms are available at the Calhoun County School District Unit office or the high school office. Organizers invite everyone to be a part of this special event by becoming a hole sponsor for a $100 donation, or a cart sponsor with a $25 donation. As a hole sponsor, the donor would have a sign with the donor’s name or company name near a tee box the day of the event. The entry fee is $55 per person ($220 per team) and includes greens fee, cart, free soft drinks, hot dogs and brats. Prize money is based on the number of teams in the field. The Calhoun High School Gym Renovation Four-Man Golf Scramble is set for 9 a.m., with a shotgun start, so arrive early for registration. Entry and sponsor forms should be returned to Calhoun High School, P.O. Box 387, Hardin, IL 62047 on or before May 13. Checks should be made payable to Calhoun High School Gym Renovation.
