JHS falls to Macomb
Beat an excellent Class 3A team one day. Lose to a very good Class 2A squad the next. That’s baseball, for ya — or at least, for Jacksonville High.
The Crimsons got off the bus at Macomb and quickly fell behind by five runs. Though Jacksonville played better as the game went on, it still fell to the Bombers, 6-3.
Macomb improved to 19-5 overall with the win. Jacksonville slipped to 12-11.
“They’re a pretty good team,” said JHS coach P.J. Moore, of Macomb. “They’re going to go pretty far in the postseason. They’ve got some big boys and they swing the bats really well.”
The Bombers greeted JHS starter Alex Meyer with a four-run first inning and led 5-0 after two. The Crimsons’ Buddy Sexton crushed a two-run homer in the fourth inning, and Kyle Graham drove in another run in the sixth, but that was all Jacksonville could do on Friday.
“The wind was blowing very hard, blowing straight out to center field,” said Moore. “We hit some deep fly balls, but they didn’t go as far as they did yesterday at Chatham.”
One of the Crimsons’ goals this season was to win 20 games, but they currently stand at 12-11 with only 12 dates remaining, including tough contests with Auburn, Highland and Central State Eight-leading Sacred Heart-Griffin.
Today at 9:30 a.m., Jacksonville will play at Pleasant Plains to make up a game that got rained out last Friday. The Crimsons will host Pittsfield on Monday before getting back to CS8 play against Lincoln on Tuesday and Wednesday.
